SUCCESSFUL ACHEMA

ACHEMA 2009 HAILED A HUGE SUCCESS FOR OYSTAR MANESTY

OYSTAR Manesty once again showcased an impressive range of innovations and services at ACHEMA in Frankfurt, Germany, resulting in orders for three tablet coating machines with more to follow in the coming months.
Of particular interest was the new development AccuSpray™ which is a unique and patented tablet press external lubrication system which significantly reduces magnesium stearate concentrations from an average of 100 g per production hour to as little as 4 g. Magnesium stearate is added to granules to act as a lubricant and prevent the material sticking to the tools. A patented high-speed piezoelectric pump ensures exact metering of the substance and keeps production rates constant. Analytical measurements show that the magnesium film completely encloses the tablets. This film comprises only 0.03% of the tablet weight.
Another new development at ACHEMA was NanoTrust® which is a unique technology in which product and batch information is covertly embedded into tablets in a way that is impossible to reproduce. There are areas where counterfeit products slip into the system and a particularly vulnerable area is when goods are repackaged. NanoTrust® offers brand protection technology for both drug and package which will enable manufacturers, retail distributors and pharmacists to provide and authenticate forensic level signatures integrated with a complete brand protection system, and is impossible to copy.
Also on display was the new Xpress® Wash in Place system which cleans all substrates from the press with the capability of using different water types, detergents or foam. Residual material is removed from the feeder and flushed automatically reducing cleaning time. The unique stepped cabinet design combined with a unique machine tilting mechanism reduces the complexity of components to be cleaned and offers a natural drainage ensuring easy completion of the cleaning regime. The introduction of a novel one-piece die table also simplifies the cleaning and the WiP sequence may also be linked to the cleaning of ancillary equipment such as dedusters and in-process control units.
The new XSpress drew lots of interest. This 4 to 10 stations press is the new generation of R&D rotary press providing R&D users with advanced instrumentation which allows customers to study compression key data. The XSpress has been designed to conform to cGMP with its wipe clean surfaces and stainless steel components. Mounted on wheels, this flexible press can be easily moved to a production zone to manufacture small production batches.

Milchhof Sterzing Now Using OYSTAR Gasti Machines

With support from the OYSTAR Group, Milchhof Sterzing (Cooperativa Latteria Vipiteno) — in Italy has nearly doubled its capacity for producing yogurt.

Production Capacity Nearly Doubled
With support from the OYSTAR Group, Milchhof Sterzing (Cooperativa Latteria Vipiteno) — in Italy has nearly doubled its capacity for producing yogurt. This permits it to meet the increasing demand for quality products of the “Sterzinger” brand. The investments in new packaging machines from OYSTAR Gasti in Schwäbisch-Hall and OYSTAR A+F in Kirchlengern have also strengthened Milchhof Sterzing’s position as the fourth-largest supplier of yogurt products to the Italian market.
The new installed machines — a Mastercup from OYSTAR Gasti and a Setline from OYSTAR A+F — provide Milchhof Sterzing with enough flexibility to produce the roughly 100 different products of its Sterzinger brand as well as about 40 others for retailing, in different cup sizes ranging from 80-gram cups for airline caterers across the 125-gram cups usual for retailed products to 500-gram family-size cups.
Milchhof Sterzing’s decision to install the Mastercup was largely motivated by the machine’s reliability and its sterility based on a comprehensive hygienic concept. The machine also features patented chain encapsulation, safe package sterilization, and product-flexible, maintenance-free aseptic filling units without moving seals. Patented thermal cup leakage monitoring is also integrated. Fast retooling and cleaning ensure production virtually without interruptions. The sealing station and filling unit handle the entire product range without the need to replace any format-specific parts. Changing from 80 or 125-gram cups to 500-gram cups is quick and easy, and can be mostly done during cleaning to minimize downtimes. Up to 40,000 premade 125-gram cups or 35,000 500-gram family-size cups can be filled per hour.
The successful SetLine from OYSTAR A+F is a genuinely high-tech machine. It has a small footprint for use in limited space. A pick & place procedure is applied to directly insert cups of any diameter into trays: 6-unit trays for 500-gram cups, 3x8 sets for 125-gram cups or 20-unit trays for 80-gram cups, as well as the common 10 and 20-unit trays. A+F also supplies all other components needed for the outer packaging process, such as automatic format-flexible tray making machines and complete palletizing and cup feeding systems for the Gasti Mastercup.
“We considered it a great advantage that the entire new line would be coming from the same corporate group,” says production manager Walter Wieser of Milchhof Sterzing. “And in fact, it has let us solve problems much faster.”

has set a milestone for Ferring Pharmaceuticals located in Saint Prex in Switzerland: An environmentally friendly closed-loop plant for organic solvents has been installed at this highly specialized biopharmaceutical manufacturer’s facilities. An HKC 400 DJ based on patented disk jet technology forms the heart of this fluid bed system.
Ferring had multiple reasons for selecting this technology: It has increased the level of automation and equipment service life, shortened process and cleaning times, speeded up filling and discharging, and significantly reduced nitrogen consumption.
Designed and engineered to Ferring’s specifications, the equipment was commissioned after only eight months. Prior to installation, the system was tested on a small scale at the OYSTAR Hüttlin laboratory; the required capacities and parameters were then scaled up for the Ferring plant. The HKC 400 DJ and peripheral units – air dehumidifier, low-temperature condensation unit, process gas heater, HEPA filters, deduster and ventilator – form a closed loop with nitrogen. The equipment is extremely easy to operate and satisfies the most exacting environmental standards.
Ferring manufactures innovative pharmaceuticals for reproductive medicine, urology, chronic gastrointestinal inflammation, endocrinology, and obstetrics. The company sees it as its mission to provide medications in these therapeutic areas that enable physicians to optimize their patients’ treatment “on the body's own terms,” as Ferring puts it.
An equally innovative industry partner in its own field, OYSTAR Hüttlin engineered a tailor-made
for Ferring. Solids are fluidized in this unit by means of a special patented “disk jet” gas distributor plate through the inflow of process gas. This process generates a torodial product flow, which provides complete and gentle mixing and homogenous spraying. Depending on the process gas conditioning, the solids can be dried, heated, moistened, cooled, or agglomerated by the injection of excipients. Coating agents can be sprayed onto the fluidized product to coat particles.
A closed-loop system for process gas with an integrated two-stage solvent recovery process supports environmentally sound and economic operation of the equipment. A brine-cooled condenser and low-temperature condensation unit with liquid nitrogen allow the organic solvents to be almost completely recovered.
The three-component nozzles spray the coating fluid directly into the fluidized product, such as pellets. The nozzles are cleaned with pure organic solvents in an integrated process step. This enables the nozzles to remain in operation over long periods.
The equipment has to be cleaned before changing over to a different product or at the end of a campaign. The Ferring plant is cleaned according to the Clean-in-Place principle (CIP). The advantage of this method is that the equipment does not need to be dismantled.

OYSTAR Hassia now an important supplier to Campina Deutschland.

Convincing New Developments

Ranstadt / Heilbronn Germany, May 13, 2008
OYSTAR Hassia has been given the status of an important supplier by Campina Deutschland. Most recently, OYSTAR Hassia delivered and installed three new packaging machines at the Campina Deutschland headquarters in Heilbronn and the company’s Elsterwerda plant. In doing so,
has helped Campina implement its strategy of harmonizing its fleet of machines. The experienced Ranstadt, Germany-based company won the contract due to its innovativeness and flexible machine concepts. The highlight is the
, a form/fill/seal machine for cups that has now begun operating: it is the first aseptic FFS system to use a doser able to make swirled products.
Asked why they placed the order with OYSTAR, Norbert Reuss, managing director of Campina Deutschland, replies that “We wanted to consolidate the machines used in our corporate group, and we also needed systems we could depend on. This was one of the reasons. But this supplier’s flexibility and innovativeness were also important reasons.”
OYSTAR Hassia developed a special doser for Campina that is able to make swirled products – an effect that until now could only be achieved with premade cups, which were rotated while being filled. The new Hassia doser has swirl dosers that twist two different products into the cup. To make sure that both products are twisted in the same pattern, all servodriven movements have to be synchronized. The TAS 32/80 is designed for up to four dosers. Special control modes also let product assortments be assembled, which is another market first.
The TAS 32/80 used in Heilbronn also very successfully meets Campina’s wish for greater package sterility and longer shelf life: it is the very first aseptic FFS machine that makes swirled products. The aseptic unit uses saturated steam heated to 150 degrees Celsius instead of H2O2, also developed by Hassia. The positive side-effects include an error rate of just 0.5 ppm (parts per million) or very close to zero. Plus, because no H2O2 is needed, more value is generated in production.

Campina is intensively taking advantage of the expertise of the OYSTAR Group: around 60 machines from OYSTAR companies, especially Hassia, A+F (Kirchlengern), Gasti (Schwäbisch Hall) and Hamba (Neunkirchen), are now being used at the seven German Campina facilities.

The new managing directors have ambitious plans to expand the customer base.
Stutensee (Germany), March 3, 2008 | OYSTAR IWK, based in Stutensee, Germany has two new managing directors: Jens Torkel, 39, and Paulo Alexandre, 41, are replacing Hans Seydel, who managed the company until his recent retirement. Jens Torkel is the senior managing director and is in charge of sales, development and engineering; Paulo Alexandre is responsible for procurement, manufacturing, assembly and services as well as for the financial and HR functions. IWK Verpackungstechnik GmbH is a member of OYSTAR, The Process & Packaging Group, formerly the packaging machinery division of IWKA AG.
Jens Torkel has a degree in industrial engineering. His first position was with Fette GmbH, a tablet press manufacturer, where he managed the North and South American markets before heading up the mechanical engineering marketing division. In 1999 he transferred to Kilian & Co Inc in the USA for four years. Following Kilian’s acquisition by IMA, Torkel was appointed vice-president of the U.S. subsidiary. His responsibilities included tableting machinery, capsule fillers, coaters and fluid beds. In January 2004 he was appointed managing director for sales at IMA Kilian GmbH & Co. KG, Germany.
Describing his goals, Torkel says “We want to become more innovative and extend our tube filling and sealing machinery production capacities, especially in Asia. At the same time we are looking to significantly expand our customer base.”
Paulo Alexandre is also an industrial engineer and began his career with Agfa-Gevaert. After holding positions in the Rheinmetall group he joined Horvath & Partners management consulting as a principal. In 2005 he switched to IWKA AG, where he managed the OYSTAR Group’s financial and controlling operations in Stutensee until his present appointment.
Paulo Alexandre’s objective is to improve the company’s operating performance. “Shorter lead times and process optimization are key to strengthening our market position, especially against the background of growing competition from the Far East," he says.
Both managing directors want to drive integration in the OYSTAR Group, because they regard modular and metrics-based system design as an integral part of product development, giving the Group and its members extreme flexibility with respect both to cost structures and to the applications they can implement. Faster time-to-market increases products’ attractiveness. The new managing directors will focus initially on the pharmaceutical industry, since they aim to achieve greater market penetration in this sector.
Profile
The OYSTAR IWK product portfolio includes tube fillers, cartoners, blister machinery, and handling systems for the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries. As of January 2008, the company employed 336 people, including apprentices, at its Stutensee facilities.
The company was set up in 1893 to supply “machinery to fill and seal tubes.” 1907 saw the foundation of “Maschinen für Massenverpackungen GmbH” in Berlin-Neukölln. This company manufactured a wide range of products, including filling equipment, pouch and development machinery, tablet packaging equipment, and tube filling and sealing machinery, and was integrated into Industriewerke Karlsruhe (IWKA) AG in 1929. In 1979 it became an independent entity within IWKA AG under the name of IWK Verpackungstechnik.
